The city-tour in Tbilisi usually starts from the Holy Trinity cathedral or commonly known Sameba, the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The cathedral was built between 1995 and 2004,and it is the third-tallest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the world and one of the largest religious buildings in the world by total area. The Sameba complex consists of the main cathedral, a monastery, a bell-tower, the residence of the Patriarch, a clerical seminary and theological academy.
Yet another must see ancient monument is Metekhi church and the monument to Vakhtang Gorgasali, the legendary founder of Tbilisi. Continue the tour visiting Old Tbilisi and Sulfur Baths. According to the legend, King Vakhtang Gorgasali discovered these sulfur baths while hunting. That is why the city was named «Tbilisi», which derives from Georgian word "Tpili" meaning «warm». Then take a cable car directly to Narikala fortress, overlooking Tbilisi. Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of Tbilisi. Have a short sightseeing tour in Tbilisi and then continue your way to Mtskheta – one of the oldest cities of Georgia, the "Holy City" by the Georgian Orthodox Church in 2014, the capital of the Eastern Georgian Kingdom of Iberia from the third century BC. Jvari Church is built on a hilltop. Enjoy the view of confluence of Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. Then visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the main cathedral of Mtskheta and a sacred place where the robe of Christ is being kept. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) and Jvari Monastery (6th century) in Mtskheta are historically significant monuments of Georgian Christian medieval architecture.
